We should not have grandparents living in cars
Imagine your grandmother living in her car. Has it ever crossed your mind that your mother or spouse might face the same reality? At 74 years old, Mary’s car has become her home. After the death of her spouse, her income was cut in half, but her rent and living expenses were not. Her rent increased by 30%, forcing her out of her home. After being evicted, she struggled to find affordable housing within her Social Security budget. Mary spends her days walking in parks and showering at a local gym. After a long career, Mary, at 74, now finds herself homeless and is trying to return to work, determined to rebuild her life. Mary's story is not unique. It reflects a growing crisis in Baldwin County, where, nationally and here locally, the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population is seniors aged 55 and older.
Our
Story
Get to Know Us: From Vision to Impact
The Sea Glass Initiative began in September 2023, born from a critical observation by three dedicated nonprofit directors. We saw firsthand the significant gaps in services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness right here in Baldwin County. It was clear that a new approach was desperately needed.
Driven by a shared vision and a deep commitment to our community, we launched the Sea Glass Initiative. Our name, "Sea Glass," perfectly captures our core belief: transformation. Just as broken, discarded pieces are shaped into something beautiful and new, we strive to turn despair into renewed hope and stability for those experiencing homelessness.
Our mission is both clear and resolute: to unite the community through compassion to end and prevent homelessness in Baldwin County. We firmly believe that every individual deserves a safe place to call home. We work to provide that crucial foundation, helping people rebuild their lives. We achieve this by operating high-quality programs that offer hope, stability, and most importantly, equal access to housing for everyone.
